## About the guest

Andy Hoffman is the Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan with joint appointments in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the School for Environment & Sustainability. Andy’s research uses organizational behavior models and theories to understand the cultural and institutional aspects of environmental issues for organizations. He has published over 100 articles/book chapters, as well as 19 books, which have been translated into six languages. In this work, he focuses on the processes by which environmental issues both emerge and develop. He also writes about the role of academic scholars in public and political discourse. Andy’s work has been covered in the New York Times, Scientific American, Time, the Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Atlantic and National Public Radio. He has served on the world’s most important committees for establishing research priorities and allocating research resources. Prior to academics, Andy worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency (Region 1) and several internationally significant companies.

## Reflections from the interview

**Professor Andy Hoffman **has been studying and writing about the role of business in the climate crisis for decades.   He began his scholarly career in search of a way to work effectively on meaningful change, and has come to believe that both better government and better business will be central to progress.   What will it take to accomplish that?   Leaders with character, and that means teaching and writing differently than we have as business academics over the past hundred years.  We need to support our students in understanding their purpose and cultivating their character.
